Superintendent Anna Shepherd announces our 2022 East Kentucky Regional Science & Engineering Fair (EKRSEF) winners.
Shepherd comments, “Congratulations to our possible future scientists, Greyson, Aleena, Brody, Reece, Brody and Kaden! We’re very proud of the hard work and effort you put into your projects and are thrilled to see you placing regionally.” Continuing, Shepherd says that, “Science content is more meaningful when activities are hands-on and completing a science fair project is a fun and rewarding way to do that. Students need to learn through inquiry, being able to formulate questions and test their theories through conducting experiments. The field of science holds many exciting opportunities for kids in postsecondary education and careers.”
Students in grades 4-12 from the following counties can participate in this regional fair: Breathitt, Floyd, Johnson, Knott, Lee, Letcher, Magoffin, Martin, Menifee, Morgan, Owsley, Perry, Pike, and Wolfe. The regional fair is hosted by the East Kentucky Science Center and Varia Planetarium. Students in grades 5 and above can advance to state.

Reece Chaffins , 7th grade student at Adams Middle placed 1st in Robotics and Intelligent Machines with his project “Scratch Engineering Game Design”. Brody McPeek, 5th grade student at Prestonsburg Elementary placed 1st in Physics and Astronomy with his project “Batter Up”. Reece and Brody advanced to state competition. Greyson Akers, 5th grade student at May Valley Elementary placed 1st in Physics and Astronomy with his project “Biomechanics of Pitching: Stride vs No Stride.”
The following 4th grade students placed in the top 3 spots: Aleena Lafferty, 4th grade student at May Valley Elementary placed 1st in Plant Sciences with her project, “Does One Bad Fruit Spoil the Bunch?” Brody Prater, 4th grader from Prestonsburg Elementary earned 1st place in Animal Sciences with “Catfish Tackics.” Kaden Spriggs, 4th grade student at South Floyd Elementary placed 3rd in Earth and Environmental Science with “Oh snap it's gummy bears.”
